Is it OK to say Happy Samhain? I tend to use Happy Samhain as a greeting – fairly innocuous! Open rituals are intended for all so you get a real mix of experience and there are almost always a good number of first timers especially at the big events. You’d be fine. Happy Halloween should do it.
What do people say Samhain? Samhain prayer to ancestors:
our world and the spirit world is thinnest. Tonight is a night to call out those who came before. Tonight I honor my ancestors.
Who is the God of Samhain? The God, at Samhain, is the Horned One, the stag of great antlers, the god of the wild hunt. He is the animal that dies so that we may eat, and the grains and corn that once lived in the field before our harvest. We can honor these late-fall aspects of both the Goddess and the God in one ritual.
Why do we dress up for Samhain? The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain.
